How Does Hypnosis Work for Weight Loss?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could close your eyes, slip into a trance and never crave fattening foods again? That’s what most people think of when they hear the words “hypnosis for weight loss” – but is that how hypnosis really works? Kind of – but not exactly.

Hypnosis is nothing more than a process where suggestions are implanted into your open, relaxed, subconscious mind. First the hypnotist (or hypnotherapist) will talk you into a relaxed, calm state of mind and body. You will probably be encouraged to take some slow, deep breaths, relax all of your muscles and release tension.

Once you feel very relaxed, you are then usually guided to “go deeper” into your subconscious mind, where the hypnotist then implants positive suggestions. What kind of suggestions? These are common examples: “Sweet and fattening foods no longer tempt you. You naturally crave nutritious, healthful foods. You easily drink 8 glasses of water daily. You love and respect your body and nourish it with high-quality foods. You feel good about yourself and carry yourself with confidence.”

After your hypnosis session (sometimes more than one session is necessary), you might find that the intensity with which you used to crave fattening foods has decreased. They may still look and smell good, but you don’t feel so compelled to eat them like you used to. You may also find yourself craving more fruit and vegetables, and a healthier lifestyle overall.

Here’s one of the problems, however. Hypnotic suggestions will not usually override your conscious choice. Even if you have been “programmed” to want healthful, nutritious foods, you can still CHOOSE to eat that cheeseburger and fries if you really want to.

So, to make hypnosis successful for weight loss, you really need to accept a certain measure of personal responsibility for your actions. Hypnotic suggestions can minimize your desire to overeat, but the decision to follow through physically must come from your conscious mind.

Still, feeling drawn more toward healthful eating and less attracted to fattening foods is a great start, so hypnosis for weight loss might just give your weight loss program the added boost to propel you to your goal weight easily and quickly.
