Should I Get Weight Loss Surgery?

By Roy Orion

For some people, their excess weight poses such a severe risk to their health that is imperative that more drastic remedial actions are taken in order to resolve the issue and so gastric band surgery has become a legitimate surgical method of intervention to handle the effects of clinical obesity.

There can be no denying that gastric band surgery is a highly invasive and drastic form of weight loss and as effective as it is, it is by no means a “get out of jail free” card meaning that the person who undergoes it will be required to ensure that they actually listen to the advice of their physician to the absolute letter.

A common mistake made about gastric band surgery is that anyone who is overweight is eligible for it, in actual fact, many patients will be required to actually lose some weight before they undergo the procedure in order to minimise the risk of failure and potential side effects.

What does it involve?

In essence, a small inflatable band will be surgically fitted around the upper part of the stomach, the part of the stomach to which food will drop down from the throat. Because the band will restrict the physical size of the “pouch” of the stomach this means that less food can actually be consumed at any given time, and the patient will also feel much fuller with less food.

The bottom part of the stomach, which is used to digest the food and then dispose of the waste material is left unaffected. However, it is also possible for the gastric band to then be inflated by using a saline solution in order to also restrict the size of the lower pouch of the stomach as well in order to further reduce the appetite of the patient.

Is it permanent?

Yes and no. Gastric band surgery is only permanent for as long as it remains in the stomach, however the surgery is totally reversible and indeed many patients who undergo this surgical procedure subsequently have it reversed when they have their weight under control.

Is it a suitable weight loss solution for me?

The only way you will be able to determine whether gastric band surgery is an appropriate solution to weight loss is to consult with your physician and make a decision from there. Only your physician will be able to advise you as the potential pitfalls and risks commonly associated with this surgery, and whether the benefits outweigh the risks for you.
