Trying to Diet – How We Can Curb Our Emotional Desire to Over Eat
By Dave Townley
For many of us, a major factor in our weight gain, are our emotions. Although we may not necessarily be hungry, emotionally we feel the need to eat. Usually when we feel like this, we tend to graze on fattening or unhealthy foods, which we know to be bad for us, but we just cannot stop ourselves. Many of us are prone to this problem, but with a few helpful tips we may be able to resolve this issue:
- Eating Equates To Happiness.
Many of us lead hectic, stressful lives. Perhaps we have a high pressure job, are coping with young children, have suffered a bereavement, or in an un fulfilling or unhappy relationship. The list of things which affect our emotions are endless, but for many of us we take eating as our road to happiness and satisfaction. By indulging ourselves in a satisfying treat, we gain pleasure and comfort, even if only for a short time.
To prevent us from habitually allowing our emotional state to affect the way we eat, we need to address our problems. Firstly, we need to start to feel good about ourselves by trying to boost our self esteem. Secondly, if we feel certain parts of our lifestyle need to be re-assessed or changed for the better, we need to look at how we can improve things to help us feel happier with our way of life. Thirdly, we should set aside quality time just for us, a little pamper time, there is no better way to feel good about ourselves.
Once we have made inroads into addressing our issues regarding our happiness, we will find that emotional eating will diminish.
- Stress Related Eating Issues.
Stress, as we know, has many detrimental effects on our bodies. Many of us are subconsciously drawn to food for comfort and to try and take away the stress we are feeling. Stress is a dynamic force, and stress eating needs to be managed healthily to achieve the best results.
Of course a positive attitude is paramount to success in managing our stress levels. Dedication is also important, if we show commitment and dedication we are more likely to break the habit of emotional eating.
Try to think of ways in which we can reduce our stress levels. Is it possible to relieve the pressures within our home, perhaps get help with the children or housework? Can we employ any flexibility within our job, reduce hours or even change jobs if possible? If any or none of these suggestions are an option, try to reschedule even a few events over a week, where possible, to give ourselves a little quality time for relaxation. Maybe by trying yoga or meditation classes we can relieve the stress and pressure of our every day life and enjoy some time to ourselves.
- Deprivation Eating.
We often feel deprived, when our families and friends are eagerly eating all our favourite foods and we can not. Even if we are not particularly hungry we feel the need to binge, believing we will never have the opportunity to enjoy such foods again.
A little self restraint is often required, especially when dining out. The temptation to eat delicious, often extremely fattening dishes that we would not normally make at home, and mouth watering desserts to die for, can be a challenge. It is so easy to give way to temptation, when all around us people are emptying their plates.
We have to look at the long term picture, we are not depriving ourselves, we are being sensible with our eating habits. There is no need to eat excessively, we are not about to have a famine. We will have many opportunities over the course of our lives to enjoy our favourite food and drink, there is no need to feel we have to eat and drink everything placed before us now.
There are always solutions to our eating problems. By addressing the emotional issues, we are taking a positive step in the right direction. A positive attitude, determination and willpower will all contribute to exorcising those bad habits.
